Overcoming Depression

Depression is a state of mind where an individual suffers from feelings like hopeless, sadness, despair and low self-esteem. When these feelings worsen, people can even experience severe forms of mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, symptoms of chronic depression can be so severe that one can go to the extreme of ending his/her life.  Therefore, it is very important to find ways of overcoming depression to avoid these drastic consequences and allow people to enjoy their regular lives.  The best strategy for accomplishing this is to undergo treatments for depression.

Due to advancements in the field of medical science, depression is no longer an illness that doesn’t have a cure. In fact, there are various ways of treating depression depending on the symptoms and the severity of the condition. Some of these options or treatments for depression are listed below:

Psychotherapy: One of the most dependable and commonly used methods for overcoming depression is psychological counseling or psychotherapy.  This is because one of the many associated causes of depression includes psychological changes inside the brain.  One interesting aspect about psychotherapy is that the treatment duration can extend from 2 weeks to even one year.  The advantage of this therapy is that it ensures a complete recovery without causing any major side effects either on the physiological state of the brain or on the psychological aspects of it.  Psychotherapy used for treating depression can be further divided into various other methods that include:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy involves rectifying the thought processes of an individual.  Depressed people primarily suffer from thoughts of pessimism.  They tend to have feelings of despair and a low self esteem.  Cognitive therapy ensures that these thoughts get eliminated from the brain and are replaced with a more positive outlook.

  1. Interpersonal Therapy : This type of treatment helps people in overcoming depression and other related psychological problems originating from events such as troubled relationships or instances of domestic violence.

Apart from these types, other treatments for depression include using different medications for depression or practicing alternative treatment methods such as phototherapy, herbal or natural therapy and electroconclusive therapy (ECT).

Medications for depression, also known as antidepressants are primarily synthetically developed and pharmacologically active chemical compounds that have been approved by USFDA as effective treatments for depression.  Primarily, these compounds alter the concentrations of neurotransmitters present between the neurons.  As a result, people tend to experience balanced moods.  The only disadvantage of these drugs is that they result in several non-specific or unrelated side effects that can be either mild or sometimes severe.  Also, one must ensure to adopt adequate precautionary measures and follow guidelines prescribed by the doctor while taking in antidepressant medications for depression.

Another effective alternative is using herbal remedies like St. John’s Wort, Folic Acid, 5-HT and ingredients derived from herbs like Gingko Biloba and Siberian Ginseng. Over the years, most of these herbal preparations have been used in traditional medicine for reducing abnormal neurological behaviors and for overcoming depression.

By keeping all the different treatments for depression in mind, you are far more likely to find the right recipe for overcoming depression.  Whether this means medications for depression, counseling, or alternative treatments, the key is always to seek out help and keep making changes until you find a mixture that works.
